clarification

anyone who has never seen my blog before and sees it now might think that all i do is plagiarize kids books i love. THATS NOT TRUE. if you go to previous posts, you will see plenty of great posts i made with just my own thoughts. i have creativity! i do! idoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoido
idoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoido
idoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoido
idoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoidoido!
sry.

another excellent kids book

If tomorrow morning the sky falls... have clouds for breakfast.
If night falls... use stars for streetlights.
If the moon gets stuck in a tree... cover the hole in the sky with a strawberry.
If you have butterflies in your stomach... ask them into your heart.
If your heart catches in your throat... ask a bird how she sings.
If the birds forget their songs... listen to a pebble instead.
If you lose a memory... embroider a new one to take its place.
If you lose the key... throw away the house.
If the clock stops... use your own hands to tell time.
If the light goes out... wear it around your neck and go dancing.
If the bus doesn't come... catch a fast cloud.
If it's the last dance... dance backwards.
If you find your socks don't match.... stand in a flowerbed.
If your shoes don't fit... give them to the fish in the pond.
If your horse needs shoes... let him use his wings.
If the sun never shines again... hold fireflies in your hands to keep warm.
If you're afraid of the dark... remember the night rainbow.
If there is no happy ending... make one out of cookie dough.

last hope

And all that the Lorax left here in this mess
was a small pile of rocks, with one word...
"UNLESS."
Whatever that meant, well, I just couldn't guess.

That was long, long ago.
But each day since that day
I've sat here and worried
and worried away.
Through the years, while my buildings
have fallen apart,
I've worried about it
with all of my heart.

"But now," says the Once-ler,
"Now that you're here,
the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you
cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better.
It's not.

"SO...
Catch!" calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
"It's a Truffula Seed.
It's the last one of all!
You're in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula.Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax
and all of his friends
may come back."

~Dr. Seuss

my mommy found a really trippy kids book called voyage to the bunny planet by rosemary wells.

far beyond the moon and stars
twenty light years south of mars
spins the gentle bunny planet
and the bunny queen is janet.

born with an amazing ear
she heard what no one else could hear-
children who had lost their way
always she was heard to say-

"here's the place where we begin,
on the day that should have been."
floating in her starry dome,
janet comes to take us home.

then it says:

it is the first duty of a flagging spirit to seek renewal in the latitudes of whimsy. i, for one, dream on beyond the five planets to a world without wickedness; verdant, mind, and populated by amiable lapins.

Benjamin Franklin (letters to a nephew, 1771)

and to thine own self, be true.

THIS IS NOT A POEM.

sometimes the people who seem the stupidest are really the wisest.
sometimes the people who seem the smartest don't know anything at all.

apple trees in plastic bags like on the metaphorical tv.
sometimes i wish i were a motherless child whoa whoa whoa.
hahahaha a ill food killer i win i win i win
to kill is the most beautiful thing hustling is an honest profession.
paradox is a pretty word and seems smooth although is is really very bumpy and tangled.
you know that scene fabulous darling why is cliche such a misused word?
it would be easier if nothing made sense.
only when my brain is malfunctioning can i figure anything out at all.

excellent music video.

this is a great video. its very acid-drenched, very edward scissorhands. it kind of reminds me of the willa wonka remake movie. i didnt really like that movie, but i like the video very much. its kind of nonsensical, but it makes a lot of dream sense, you kno? its by cake, my 3rd favorite band. the song is "friend is a four-letter word". here tis:

its world that makes the love go round.

soul-peace candles

i went to services at saint john the divine tonight. it was strange. i love what they do; candles in the darkness, beautiful colored glass and art, angel-sound singing, talking about love and peace and brotherhood. and i wondered as i sat there, why can't religion always be like this? why do we fight over inner peace? why do the people who say that they are the most spiritual advocate killing things? what has become of what used to be magical? where did the beauty go from western religion?
it was a beautiful service. i wish it were true, though.
merry christmas.

snot mind

who knew that snot could make you think deep thoughts?
i just came home from a hannukah party, and its like 10:40,so i'll make this quick. im a little out of it cuz its so late, which is probs part of the reason this happened. anyway, i had, like, a gerbil or something stuck in my right sinus, and i went to the bathroom to snort it out. sorry if that grosses you out. anyway, so i was snorting as hard as i possibly could, and may be i hyperventilated or something, cuz suddenly it felt like i had snorted out my mind. like, my mind had flown above my head. i was looking down at my head and my mind and i wondered if it was possible to blow your mind out your nose. anyway, i got the gerbil out of my nose. i now know how to snort the addams family theme song.
no, this is how i act when im sober, actually.
which i always am.

the human body

why are humans afraid of their own bodies? why do we wear clothes in the summer? its very silly. you would think human beings could get over superstitions from centuries ago. actually, i just read a really cool book of my dads called the nude in photograph. no, its not porn. its about nude photography and the body in general and why people are so afraid of it. it was very interesting. why ARE we afraid of our bodies? i mean, i get that they represent sexuality, but what if theres, like, a 13 year old strolling down the street naked? why is that wrong? are we all pedophilliac perverts, that we can't even see a 13 year olds body without raping them? what the hell is that about? none of these questions have easy answers, and i need to go to bed. goodbye!

magic

2nite is solstice. i dont know much about solstice, but i very much wished to celebrate it. i guess its kind of corny what i did, but my only sources of information are two of my friends and the internet. i told my parents i was going to take a nap, then locked myself in my room, and turned off the lights and said all of the things that i was thankful for and all the things i loved and all the things i would do in the future. then i wrote all of it down on a piece of paper, opened my window all the way, and stepped outside and made a paper airplane of of words. i threw the airplane into the air and prayed that it would help to win the sun back. just as i threw it, a strong wind began to blow like a scream, like a prayer. i laughed and jumped up and down. just then my dad started pounding on my locked door and asked what was going on.

religion

2 of my friends, lola and flower, are celebrating the solstice tomorrow night. i will be sitting on my couch reading a book ive already read.
LIFE IS NOT FAIR.
since ive pretty much said whats on my mind and this blog post is too short, ill just talk about my religion(s).
my dad is jewish. since his dad died when he was a teenager, he has decided to honor his life by:
a) keeping kosher and making me do the same thing when im at his house.
b) raising my brother and i jewish- this consists of going to hebrew school (which i hate), going to services (which is sometimes cool but usually dull and endless), and not letting me say that maybe i don't want to be jewish because it seems like judaism is just about stupid rules that have no meaning.

im not saying i don't like judaism. its cool that there's a religion based on arguing. jewish study is like a book club. but sometimes it just annoys me that i have no say in my religion, even though i am more involved in this sort of thing than most kids.

my mom is a wasp like most americans, but she also celebrates shabbat and stuff with us. we have a christmas tree and stuff, but we're really a jewish family.
i have always thought that religion should be like anything else- you choose the one you like, because you agree with what it says, not because its what your parents chose.
if i could choose, my family would go on buddhist retreats AND jewish retreats, we would go to jewish temples AND buddhist temples AND hindu temples AND church AND mosques and celebrate the solstice.

*sigh*. sometimes it seems like two religions isn't enough.

modern gods

this is an interesting thing that was brought up between my friends and i at lunch today: what is the difference between a celebrity and a god?
take for example, miley cyrus. its all right, i don't like her any better than you do. i mean, as far as you and i know, miley cyrus could not exist at all. we believe in her because we've seen her on tv and looked at pictures of her. little girls feel that if they met her, she would be kind and sweet and give them a hug. people have opinions of her even though they don't know what she's really like on the inside. people basically worship her. they don't process in their brains that shes a real person. even i can't process the idea that she has feelings and a personality and that sort of thing.
you know what? the ancient gods could have been real people. there really could have been people who lived on mount olympus and stuff. sure, most of the things that are written about them aren't true, but they didn't have photography back then. maybe the gods were just celebrities. its possible. its also possible that celebrities are gods, depending on your definition of "god".

mind

i think that there are two levels of the mind.
there's the level of the mind where we accept the things that we have been told without wondering why, and there's the level of the mind where we don't understand those things at all. almost everyone uses the first level all the time. i think that to be enlightened means to be able to use the second level all of the time. that's why the tao te ching says to empty your mind.

when are we gonna have to use this?

one time, i asked my beloved dadzy why i had to learn to reduce fractions. he said:
"for two reasons. one is that you might only like reading books now, but you might want a math job in the future, and to let kids your age decide what they are going to do with their lives is criminal, really. you need options.
"the other reason is that different classes teach you different ways of thinking. like, when you read a book you can use not just your creative mind but your logical mind, because you've been developing it in math."
this is totally true. like, when i've been reading a book that has a very specific style, i always think to myself in that style afterward. its the same with math.
yesterday, after doing some intensive algebra, i started philosophizing and stuff. then, something occurred to me. everything is like algebra. if you want to kno why someone did something, you work it out like an algebra problem; the thing they did is x, and the things you kno about them that could be the answer are the numbers. get it? you have to isolate x to find out whats going on.
everything people do is bare human instincts (the variable) buried under piles of formal societal crap. for some reason, it has always been this way and always will be.
philosophy and algebra are almost the same. philosophy is just for people with broader minds. algebra is for the more simple-minded.

more pictures!

just 2 pics that i want to share with the world.

this is the REAL drawing of obama eating a waffle, not this. yeah.

this is a drawing i did in math class. dont worry, the axe (my codename for our math teacher) was reading us a short story. what do you think it means? i cant figure it out, personally. i do think its facinating. a little disturbing, too.

the gods

since bean is writing about the gods , i though it would be a good idea to say some stuff i noticed about them.
*zeus, the head honcho, is also kind of a jerk. he is like king henry VII. he want food, drink, power, women, flattery. hes not nice to anyone, and he angers easily.
*actually, all the gods are like that, if not as much. the women are bitches (especially aphrodite- ick.), and the men are power-grabbing jerks. therefore, according to the greeks,
*you have to be nasty to get power.
*you also have to be really good looking and/or kill your dad.
*aphrodite, the goddess of love, doesn't love anyone except occasionally ares. this would suggest that love is good for nothing but causing trouble.
*hera, as stated by bean, is an old hag who has nothing better to do that nag her husband. in her defense, i would be a nasty person if my husband was zeus. maybe the greeks werent into marriage. im not either, actually.
*hephaestus is crippled, ugly, and doesnt talk much. yet he gets more done than any of the other gods. actually, he's the only male god with a real job. maybe thats the greeks looking down on the working class.
*the odd thing about the myths is that they were composed like gossip. there is no reverence for the gods in them. theyre just stories, and the gods dont behave well at all. yet these stories are supposed to teach lesson. this is hard to understand.

my favorite god are:
female- i like hestia, then demeter, then athena. although athena can get nasty sometimes.
male-this is hard. most of the male gods are jerks. i like hephaestus, then apollo, then john lennon.

if i had a daughter, i would name her demeter.
if i had a son, i would name him apollo.

philosophy can be found in even the most uncreative places.

so, i was taking the speed test on the mind-numbing typing program at my school, and, by some fluke, i got something interesting to type. naturally, i wrote it down immediately. here it is:

i was just going to say, when i was interrupted, that one of the many ways of classifying minds is under the heads of arithmetical and algebraical intellects. all economical and practical wisdom is an extension or variation of the following arithmetical formula: 2+2=4. every philosophical proposition has the more general character if the expression A+B=C. we are mere operatives, empirics, and egotists until we learn to think in letters instead of numbers.

life is confusing.

sometimes i am just overwhelmed.
like, i'll be doing really great, and then i will realize what a jerk i am/have a really bad mood swing where i hate everything. duz that make any sense?
like, sometimes i realize how impossible it is to make descisions, because, as i stated in truth and life is complicated, you will be in the same situation doing and wanting the same basic things no matter what desisions you make.
i think the reason i have mood swings is that since everything is so similar, i see no difference between anger and calm. what is more important, what you feel on the outside, or what you do on the inside? ( wrote it like that on purpose, btw)

Tuesday, December 9, 2008

oh, yes! i do have something to say about john lennon!

first of all, in response to lola, paul IS dead! he is! heisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheisheis.
he IS!
HA! so there.

ok, and now what i really had to say:
when he made that song strawberry fields, he was standing in front of a old folk's home called strawberry fields.
it really gives you a funny feeling when you listen to the lyrics and think of senile peeps getting sponge baths.

and mr holst cried when he heard that he was killed.
and the headline of the village voice that day was "why wasn't paul?"
(but it was)

*sigh.* very sad day was yesterday.

im sorry that im not talking about john lennon, i just have no thoughts on him rite now.

i have a theory. if u have a problem with bathroom talk, please don't read it.
people find pee fine to discuss but poo not fine to discuss.
when has anyone ever said to u "i have to go crap"? they don't. they DO, however, say "i need to go pee". why is this? why is feces worse than pee-pee? i find this facinating. little kids go thru poo obsession phases, not pee obsession phases. homless guys don't poo on the street, at least not in movies. there's urinals in men's bathrooms, not pooinals. maybe that last one has other reasons, but whatever. i still think this is something to consider.
POO POWER!

bill dunlap

this is a poem that i saw graffitied onto a post:

there exists neither heaven nor hell,
neither gods nor devils,
neither spirit nor angels,
nor miracles;
nothing to pray to, so no need for prayer.
there is only this wondrous
world and the glorious
natural cycle of life and death.
examine it closely,
and surely it should be enough.

there was also a link:

check him out. he's pretty good.

they say a picture is worth a thousand words. in that case, every one of these pictures should be 5 times as interesting as my blog!! :-) enjoy.

spring awakening

i saw spring awakening last night. it was amazing.
its so surreal to think that kids could be so traumatized and destroyed by their own parents, and themselves. it was really horrifying.
one thing that occurred to me was that those kids from 100 years ago were exactly like kids their age now. its just their surroundings that made their life a living niflheim. goodness.

odin's speech

this is a speech that the norse god, odin, makes to primitive man to explain to him how to behave. i am posting it here because i think that it is still very valid in our modern era. i am copying this from d'aulaires' norse gods and giants, so the speech is probably not a literal translation from the norwegian, but it's great anyway.

"your friend's friends shall be your friends; your friend's foes shall be your foes. tread down the path to your friend's house and don't let it overgrow with weeds," he said.
"always keep your door open to the tired traveler. the man who comes to your house with shivering knees needs a place by the fire and dry clothes and warm food.
"when you enter the house of a stranger, look into cupboards and dark corners to see if a foe might be hiding. then take the seat that is offered to you, and listen more than you speak. for then no one will notice how little you know.
"always have a bite to eat before going to a feast; a hungry man is not a bright speaker.
"it's an unwise man who sits awake worrying all night. when morning comes he will be too tired to think and matters will be still more tangled."
and last, he always said, "men die, cattle die, you yourself must die one day. there is only one thing that will not die- the name, good or bad, that you have made for yourself."

ideals

everyone must have an ideal. if you don't have an ideal, you will never be happy with who and what you are. as they say in south pacific,
you got to have a dream,
if you don't have a dream,
how you gonna have a dream come true?

therefore, i will state my dream.
my dream is to be a happy person, and to inspire others to be happy, too.
my dream is to live in the simplest possible way, so that i don't have to worry.
my dream is to have a slinkster-cool daughter and name her demeter.
my dream is to plant flowers in people's minds, so that we can all do what we really want to do when we want to do it.
i have a dream today!

wow, that turned out like a poem!

(i apologize to whoever owns the rights to dr mlk's dream speech. i didn't intend to plagiarize.)

good things

ok, i just took a trip thru the wonderland of fashion blogs. here are my discoveries:

and these blogs all have links to other cool ones!
feel free to explore.

the best day ever!

today was the best day ever. it was like, a return to something that had long been buried under politics and homework and weather. we just SDJKLF. that is exactly how i felt. SDJKLF. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
here is a sure-fire way to make your day the best one ever:

*do something you've never done before, or not in a long time.
*hug a stranger or semi-stranger.
*sit in the street and philosophize.
*sing in public.
*proclaim yourself to be the tooth fairy.
*scream THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER! at the top of your lungs.

i deeply, DEEPLY apologize for the corniness of this post. it sounds like a chain email, i kno. the next one will be better, i promise.

black blog

the reason that i gave my blog a makeover in black (besides the fact that it looks wicked cool) is that it is good for the enviornment.
when your screen is covered with mostly black, your computer is using less energy. i am obsessed with making my screen mostly black. one really good thing to do it make your desktop background black, or center the image and make the rest of the screen black.
green is the new black.

what a waste of a life

in india, my favorite country, there is devastation and death.
this is a time to mourn. this is a time to be angry and sad and horrified.
why would you kill innocent people just to make a point?
think about the poor people who loved the victims.
172 people have been killed SO FAR.
tomorrow, i am wearing black in their honor.
read the new york times. they have a story about it.

clarification

that last post was not a poem
it was a real convo i had with a flower.
a petrified flower, that is.

conversation with a flower

gobbsy gads
is my best friend

y do u dance at this late orange?

because teddy bear came from the mountains

which mountains- the ones of gildorrr, or the ones of lothar?

heres a trick:
dont kill me

the ones north of the giant red hat

o no!
not the red hat!
im too young
i have not yet passed the way of the great angel
salvage the coat or all will be lost!

take the coat and whisper in the Jolly Rancher's ear

whisper of strawberries and cream
whisper of the great jungoo's wrath
beware

and then the angel will release you above the purple sky

the maroon sky
in our eye of truth, that is.

love

u kno how rasta dudes say "respect" 2 eachother a lot?
well, i was thinking that us guys could say "love" 2 eachother a lot!
(since "peace" is worn out, anyway.)
like, lola and i just ended an IM convo- she said just "love", and i said just "love", and it was over!
lets talk like that from now on.

a good puzzle

my dad is a teacher. last night, he was grading papers, and i read one of them.
the assignment was to write about a misunderstanding or an argument. one boy, the one whose paper i read, wrote a paper on an argument he had with his friend about opposites.
his friends said that the opposite of dog was not dog, while the boy himself insisted that the opposite of dog was cat. who was right?
my father and i got into the same argument. is a negation the same as an opposite? what is an opposite, anyway? the dictionary says that an opposite is: something contrary or radically different in some respect common to both.
so, opposites must be similar, yet radically different. the opposite of dog is not "tomato".
the conclusion my dad and i reached was that opposite is only an opinion. it is relative. a negation is not the same thing as an opposite.
its like what the petrified flower said about truth- it is in the eye of the beholder. the opposite of dog is indeed cat, but only because we think that it's true.
just something to think about: how about chocolate and vanilla?

life is complicated

really, the big paradox is that life is complicated because its so simple.
everyone is the same, but in a different way.
we all want these things: power, money, materialistic things, happiness, people to pay attention to us and love us, interesting challenges to overcome, fairness in life, and to be better than others. anyone who says that they don't want these things is lying.
when you think about it, all religions and ideologies want the same thing; to help people attain these unrealistic goals without getting out of order.
the heroes in movies are always so selfless, and don't have those things, and are more interested in helping others than getting them. the villans have those things, and want more of them. no one is like either of those characters.
we all want those things, and none of them are possible. but if we don't try, there's no point at all. it's all exactly the same, in a different way.
see what i mean?

horseradish cheese, really? facinating!

i wonder if it's possible to live without any money at ALL. like no investments, no bank accounts, no job, no connection to the man whatsoever. probably not. i mean, you could, but it would be really hard. no one's done it in thousands of years.
you would have to grow your own food, make your own clothes, generate you own light and heat, get you own water, build your own house, create your own art. it would be incredibly hard. the better idea would be to have money in the bank, but not use it unless there was an emergency, like a bad harvest.

truth

i have just figured something out:
nothing is true.
there is nothing that you can say or think or do that is without flaws.
no one lives their life the way they wanted to- no one lives their life perfectly.
we all make mistakes. people always tell that to you, but really think about it. think about who you are and why you are and how its such good luck that you're a person and you're still alive and you have access to a computer. you could just as easily be a starving african mother with AIDS, or a jar of peanut butter. wouldn't that suck?
rethink everything. then you will see that nothing makes sense.

(ps: no offense to starving african mothers with AIDS. didnt mean that in a durogatory way.)

Friday, November 21, 2008

this is the way i see it:

between the economy and global warming and there being no one to blame, the whole world is headed down the toilet. the apocalypse is coming, so theres really no point in being angry or sad or crying while you type this, because we really should just enjoy life while its happening, you know?
i'd like it if all the buildings got torn down, and we just live in a beautiful vegetarian homeless anarchy. we should just give up. we really should. we've only got a few decades left, we might as well make the most of it, you know?
there was a guy who wrote a book a few hundred years ago. here is more or less a kind-of-sort-of-half-remembered-quote from the book that i think is very important to think about:
"if we assume that man has been corrupted by an artificial society, what is the natural state? imagine- walking up and down the forrest, without duties, without civilization, without speech."

i wish there was something we could just DO. i wish it was just, like, a choice:
do we do the wrong thing, or don't we? but its not. and it makes me confused and sad and scared.
ah, well. back to the drawing board.

untitled sonnet

At night the sky does crawl below the bats,
In day the birds fly up and start to sing.
When it is hot the sky is full of cats,
When it is cold the bears up and take wing.

“Oh, why?” I ask the cows of death to leap,
My fate stands on my bad photography.
“Return my life at once!” I cry to sheep,
As wind brings down chrysanthemums to me.

I look at me, distorted through a glass,
And cry at night beneath a blue half-moon.
Contemplating life on lawns of grass,
And wond’ring if my food will be here soon.

I dream as firewood begins to mull,
And wish that real life wasn’t quite so dull.

what im gonna do when i grow up

when i grow up, i will buy one of those big ugly glass office buildings from one of those business that went out of business, and turn it into a giant greenhouse-farm, and build a kibbutz there and sell organic food. plus, ill write for the ny times as my day job.
soul-flower.com is a GREAT website. they have nag-champa soap!
what's kind of sad is that there are no websites that sell hippie clothes from the early 60's, like '63-'66. u kno, really psychedelic, bright-colored, granny-takes-a-trip-esque. *sigh*.
ik, ik. im a poser.

who are silo and roy the gay penguins, and why do they rock this world?

my friend lola belly button (check out her blog: squirrelseatwaffles.blogspot.com) asked me to please explain who silo and roy the gay penguins are. here tis:

there's a picture book about silo and roy. silo and roy were these real penguins in the central park zoo who fell in love. but they were sad that they couldn't have babies like all the other penguins, so the zookeeper gave them an orphan egg to raise. but theyre real. its awesome.
actually, silo and roy are also my backpack, billy's role models. he is also a gay penguin.

nose-picking

why do people have the instinct to pick their nose?
and why are people always so disgusted when other people do it?
very strange.

also: how could you fill the albert hall with holes?
i kno that its supposed to be like a zen-buddhist thing that makes no sense, but i find it very confizzling. no matter how many holes you put in, it would still be empty. actually, there would be less and less. so, maybe the number of holes it takes to fill it is the number of holes it takes to get rid of all of it. very taoist, the idea that to fill something you must empty it. trippy.

1st post

this marks the first post in this blog since its conception, two years ago.
this blog will be about anything that's really eating my mind. i will probably post around once a week. ok.

"if you're going, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair"
you kno, its kind of backward that the hippies wore flowers in their hair, because thats killing things just to look good, which is not cool. ok, so sometimes i do it, also...

when pot is legalized, will people look on this era as being like prohibition? my mom compared this to prohibition, which i think is very interesting.

it makes me very sad that its cold outside. i love the summer. more specifically, i love central park in the summer. what did the flower children do when all the flowers died?
